How to choose outdoor lighting
Outdoor fixtures face rain, snow and coastal air, so the first thing to check is the rating. Wet-rated fixtures can be exposed directly to rain, while damp-rated fixtures need a covered location such as a porch ceiling. Powder-coated aluminum and marine-grade finishes hold up best in the West Coast climate.
For entry doors, choose wall lanterns about one quarter to one third the height of the door, mounted slightly above eye level. Photocells and motion sensors add security and save energy.

Wet-rated fixtures can take direct rain and water, while damp-rated fixtures are designed for covered outdoor areas that see moisture but no direct rain.
What size outdoor wall light should I get for my front door?
A fixture about one quarter to one third the height of the door looks balanced. Use a pair on either side of the door for a symmetrical look.
Are LED outdoor lights suitable for cold weather?
Yes. LEDs perform well in cold temperatures, and many of our fixtures list a minimum operating temperature in their specifications.
