Shop Step Lights →How to light a hallway
Use flush mounts, which keep clear of the walkway, spaced about every 8 to 10 feet. Wall sconces mounted about 60 to 66 inches from the floor add warmth and interest.
On stairs, light the top and bottom landings, and add step lights low on the wall for safe, glare-free light at night.
Hallway lighting FAQ
Can't find your answer? Our lighting consultants are happy to help with sizing, finishes and installation.
Ask a consultantHow bright should a hallway be?
Hallways need less light than living spaces. Even, glare-free light from a few fixtures is usually enough.
Can I use sconces in a narrow hallway?
Yes. Choose slim sconces that project only a few inches from the wall to keep the walkway clear.
Should stairs have lights at both ends?
Yes. Lighting each end of a staircase, ideally on 3-way switches, is good practice for safety.
Not sure which fixture is right for your space?
Send us your floor plan or a few photos and our lighting consultants will suggest fixtures, sizes and placement, free of charge.
