Match the fixture to the table: round or square tables suit a round chandelier or pendant, while rectangular tables suit a linear fixture or a pair of pendants.
Choose a diameter about 12 inches narrower than the table's width, or a linear fixture about two-thirds of the table's length. Hang the bottom 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, adding about 3 inches for each foot of ceiling above 8 feet.
Dining room lighting FAQ
Can't find your answer? Our lighting consultants are happy to help with sizing, finishes and installation.
Ask a consultantShould a dining light be on a dimmer?
Yes. A dimmer lets you go from bright for homework or serving to soft for dinner.
Can I use two pendants over a dining table?
Yes. On long tables, two matching pendants evenly spaced along the table look balanced.
Should the light be centred on the table or the room?
Centre it on the table, since that is where the eye goes. A swag kit or ceiling box move can help if the box is off-centre.
