Good kitchens use three layers. Recessed or trimless pot lights provide general light, pendants or a linear fixture over the island add focus and style, and under-cabinet lights brighten the counters where you prep.
Over an island, hang pendants 30 to 36 inches above the counter. Use one pendant for every 2 to 3 feet of island, spaced 24 to 30 inches apart, or one linear fixture about two-thirds the island's length.
Kitchen lighting FAQ
Can't find your answer? Our lighting consultants are happy to help with sizing, finishes and installation.
Ask a consultantHow many pendants over a kitchen island?
Two or three for most islands. Long islands may suit three or four smaller pendants, or a single linear pendant.
What colour temperature is best for a kitchen?
3000K is warm but clear and works well in most homes. 3500K to 4000K feels crisper and suits very modern or white kitchens.
How far apart should pot lights be?
As a rule of thumb, divide the ceiling height by two. On an 8 foot ceiling, space pot lights about 4 feet apart.
