Layer your light. Start with a ceiling fixture or pot lights for overall light, add floor and table lamps for reading and conversation areas, then finish with sconces or picture lights to highlight walls and art.
For a ceiling fixture, add the room's length and width in feet. The total, in inches, is a good starting diameter.
Living room lighting FAQ
Can't find your answer? Our lighting consultants are happy to help with sizing, finishes and installation.
Ask a consultantHow many lamps does a living room need?
Most living rooms look best with two to four lamps placed around the room, so every seat has light nearby.
Chandelier or ceiling fan?
Choose a chandelier or large pendant for style and a focal point. Choose a fan with a light kit if comfort in summer is the priority.
What colour temperature should I use?
2700K to 3000K gives a warm, relaxing feel for living spaces.
Not sure which fixture is right for your space?
