A chandelier sets the tone for a dining room, foyer or living space, so size and height matter as much as style. A simple rule of thumb: add the room's length and width in feet, and use that number in inches as the chandelier's approximate diameter. A 12 ft by 14 ft dining room suits a fixture around 26 inches wide.
Over a dining table, choose a chandelier roughly one half to two thirds the width of the table and hang it so the bottom sits about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. In a two-storey foyer, the bottom of the fixture should generally clear the second-floor sightline.
Chandeliers FAQ
Can't find your answer? Our lighting consultants are happy to help with sizing, finishes and installation.
Ask a consultantWhat size chandelier do I need for my dining room?
Add the room's length and width in feet and use that total in inches as a starting diameter, then check it is no more than about two thirds the width of your table.
How high should a chandelier hang over a table?
Most designers recommend 30 to 36 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the chandelier on an 8 ft ceiling, adding about 3 inches for each extra foot of ceiling height.
Are your chandeliers dimmable?
Most are. Integrated LED chandeliers list their compatible dimmer type in the specifications, and fixtures that take bulbs can be dimmed with dimmable bulbs.
